Viscosity determines how quickly a shock compresses and returns; grade 45 produces medium damping for controlled rebound. Builders normally select oil weight to match spring rate and piston size to reach the target traction and response for the track surface.
When replacing fluid, drain the old oil, inspect seals and pistons for wear, refill slowly to minimize air, and cycle the shock to confirm smooth travel before refitting to the car. Testing under load is recommended to verify long term consistency.
