Hobby Boss 1/35 PLA ZBD-05 Amphibious IFV - Modern amphibious armour in scale

The Hobby Boss 1/35 PLA ZBD-05 Amphibious Infantry Fighting Vehicle kit captures the design features of a versatile amphibious IFV used by marine forces. Its dual-role capability for sea and land operations makes it an interesting subject for scale enthusiasts.

Operational notes and maritime performance

The ZBD-05 is often compared to the U.S. Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle on account of its amphibious mission profile. It was designed to be launched from assault ships and can travel over 10 kilometres offshore at speeds over 25 km/h. The hydraulically actuated bow and transom flaps create a planning surface to lower hydrodynamic drag and improve waterborne speed.

Model build experience and finish potential

This version reflects a two-man turret armed with a 30mm cannon and an AFT-5 ATGM rail launcher instead of the older three-man 105mm turret. The real vehicle carries a crew of three plus nine marines, and the kit's 840 plus parts deliver a satisfying build for those who enjoy intricate assembly and display-ready detailing.

Assembly time varies with experience, but expect many hours across multiple sessions due to the high parts count. Planning work in stages helps manage complexity.
There are limited aftermarket options for modern PLA armour; however, common upgrades include brass gun barrels, extra detailing sets, and resin accessories to improve turret and hull detail.
Pre-painting individual track links or sections, and using a track jig or alignment pins, makes fitting the 224 individual links easier and gives a cleaner result.
