Hobby Boss 1/35 Sd.Kfz.221 Recon Car Model

The Sd.Kfz.221 Leichter PanzerspƤhwagen was a light armoured reconnaissance vehicle used from 1935 through 1944. Constructed on the sPkw I Horch 801 chassis, it has a distinctive angular hull and small turret, and it used a 67 kW (90 hp) Horch 3.5 petrol engine to reach road speeds near 80 km/h, though it was not designed for rough terrain.

Service Use and Limitations

Deployed mainly with reconnaissance elements in armoured divisions, the vehicle excelled on good roads but struggled in harsher environments such as the Eastern Front and desert theatres, which accelerated a shift to more flexible platforms like the Sdkfz 250 half-track.

Kit Construction Notes

The Hobby Boss 1/35 kit reproduces the vehicle with close attention to scale detail. It includes over 320 plastic pieces across 13 sprues plus two photo-etched parts for enhanced realism. Slide-molded upper and lower hull parts assist in producing accurate panels and clean joins for model builders.

Specifications

  • Scale: 1/35
  • Length: 134 mm
  • Width: 57 mm
  • Total Plastic Parts: 320+
  • Photo-Etched Parts: 2 pieces
  • Rubber Tires: 4 with fine detail

Collector and Diorama Value

Detailed interiors, realistic rubber tyres and the inclusion of photo-etched elements make this kit a strong candidate for display models and diorama projects that aim to show operational reconnaissance scenes.

Painting is required to finish the model; the kit typically includes decal options for authentic markings, so prepare paints matching period schemes for best results.
The kit uses detailed rubber tyres that reproduce tread and sidewall detail more realistically than hard plastic alternatives.
Yes. Photo-etched pieces are thin and require careful bending and attachment with cyanoacrylate or specialist adhesives; use fine tweezers and a bending tool for best results.
