P-38J Lightning in 1/72 from Italeri - Compact WWII Twin-Boom Model

The Italeri 1/72 model of the Lockheed P-38J Lightning captures a noteworthy WWII design. The full-sized P-38J used twin V-1710 Allison engines rated at 1,425 horsepower each, which helped it reach speeds beyond 660 km/h and perform long-range roles across multiple fronts.

This kit recreates the central cockpit and twin-boom silhouette faithfully, and the molded features reflect the aircrafts standard armament of four Browning 12.7 mm machine guns plus a Hispano M2 cannon. Its strength lay in stability and endurance, making the Lightning a favoured escort and strike aircraft despite not matching small fighters in agility.

Clean mould lines and test-fit parts dry first. Light sanding and removing flash helps parts align neatly and reduces visible gaps after gluing.
Acrylics and enamels both work well. Use a primer, then airbrush or brush with appropriate camouflage colours. Avoid heavy layers to keep fine detail visible.
Yes. The compact 1/72 scale fits easily into airfield or carrier deck dioramas. Small ground crew figures can add context, though figures are not included.
Aftermarket decals, resin cockpit details and clear canopies are common upgrades. Check scale and fit before purchasing additions.
