Leonardo da Vinci's notebooks contain many inventive mechanisms that blend function with elegant design. The mechanical drum is an example of his practical thinking about timing and motion. This Italeri model recreates that idea for modellers to study and display.
The drum concept, recorded in the Atlantic Codex, uses pegged rollers to lift and release beaters in sequence. Tempo adjustments are achieved by changing peg placement on the drums. The original sketches imply both mobile and fixed operation, with wheels or a crank providing drive.
For builders, the Italeri 3106 offers a hands-on study of geared movement and timing. Once completed, the model demonstrates mechanical function and makes an appealing exhibit for a workshop bench or cabinet.
