Is the 5mm shaft compatible with common pinion gears?

Yes, the 5mm shaft accepts standard pinions designed for that diameter, but verify set screw position and pitch to avoid slippage.

Can I use a lower KV motor for more torque?

A lower KV unit can increase torque at the expense of top speed. The ORI28188 at 2100KV is a compromise for both acceleration and high rpm performance.

What gearing changes suit varied track surfaces?

Reduce pinion teeth for tighter tracks or loose surfaces, and add teeth for long straights; monitor motor temps after each change.
