Origins and military role of the Kubelwagen Type 82

Conceived by Dr. Ferdinand Porsche in 1936 under the "People's Car" concept, the Kubelwagen Type 82 was adapted for military use as conflict grew. By 1938 the armed services requested a military specification, yielding a vehicle prized for its simple monocoque chassis, reliable engine and resilient suspension. It was deployed across many fronts, with about 51,000 built by war's end.
