SOC-3 Seagull Compact 1:700 Naval Biplane

This plastic model reproduces the SOC-3 Seagull at 1:700 scale and is tailored for compact shipboard dioramas and display shelves.

The Vought SOC series began as a shipboard observation seaplane in the early 1930s. The SOC-3 was an improved production version that saw service through the mid-1930s and into the early wartime years, launching from battleship and cruiser catapults for reconnaissance, spotting and communication tasks. Its biplane form and stowage arrangements made it a familiar element aboard U.S. large ships before the shift to carrier air power.

The kit faithfully outlines the SOC-3 profile at 1:700 scale, optimized for smaller naval groupings. Kit measurements indicate a fuselage length of about 14.33mm and a wingspan of about 16.6mm. Parts are arranged on multiple sprues with a number of fine components; steady hands and precise adhesive application are recommended for canopy fit and rigging accuracy.

Markings provided depict United States Navy machines in non-specular Blue Gray camouflage. Twelve clear components are included to represent canopies and windows. Painters chasing an authentic finish should use flat blue-gray tones and light weathering to accentuate scale surface detail.

Specifications

A neat 1:700 scale SOC-3 Seagull suited to modest displays and collectors focused on naval reconnaissance types.

Use a flat base in a non-reflective blue-gray, apply decals after a glossy coat for adhesion, then seal with a flat varnish to match the kit's non-specular finish.
Mask clear pieces with low-tack tape and paint surrounding areas first; attach canopies late in the build to prevent overspray and glue fogging.
The small part count means some fiddly joins; dry-fitting and light sanding of mating faces will improve alignment before final gluing.
Subtle washes, light dry-brushing and tiny paint chipping applied sparingly will suggest surface wear without overpowering the model at this small scale.
