The compact Honda Monkey earned a following thanks to its small 50cc air-cooled engine and compact red frame, making it a standout leisure motorcycle since 1967. Features like folding handlebars and a fold-down seat meant owners could tuck the bike into small spaces, which added to its appeal. Gradual upgrades to suspension and wheel size kept the design fresh over the years.
For the 40th anniversary in December 2006 Honda issued a special edition identified by red wheels, a black fuel tank and a checkered seat. Tamiya's 1/6 scale kit recreates that celebratory model so hobbyists can replicate the period-correct styling at tabletop scale.
The kit reproduces anniversary-specific details, including vinyl stickers for the checkered seat and metal-plated parts for elements such as the muffler guard and handlebars to give a realistic metallic finish. Tank and side cover emblems are separately moulded to improve authenticity.
Working suspension with metal damper springs and foldable handlebars mirror the real bike's function. The modelled 50cc engine includes vinyl tubing to represent hoses and exhaust lines, and alternate muffler and damper options let experienced builders tweak the setup.
