The I-400 class was engineered as a submersible aircraft carrier, designed to carry three Seiran fighters in its hangar. Measuring approximately 122 metres in length and displacing 6,560 tons when submerged, it was notable for its unprecedented size among submarines at the time. Its long range meant it could undertake far-reaching missions without refuelling.
Completed in December 1944, the class missed active wartime operations due to the conflict ending. Nevertheless, its innovative concept is often cited in discussions of later long-range submarine development.
The 1/350 kit from Tamiya captures the I-400s prominent hangar and deck features with high fidelity. Transparent elements are used to show the Seiran aircraft stored inside the hangar tube, adding display depth for dioramas and museum-style layouts.
For fine finishing, the kit supplies photo-etched parts for small-scale details like handrails and the crane, along with four metal torpedoes and clear canopy pieces for the Seiran planes. The package also contains forty-eight 1/350 figures to stage crew and shipboard activity.
