Scale portrait of the Tamiya 31320 Natori

The Tamiya 31320 1/700 Japanese Light Cruiser Natori represents a Nagara-class ship from the 1920s and 1940s era. Commissioned in 1922, Natori was involved in events such as the Battle of Sunda Strait and was sunk by a US submarine in August 1944. This kit captures the vessel in its early 1940s layout, reflecting the narrow hull and design capable of around 36 knots.

What the kit includes

Designed for modellers interested in naval history, the kit offers detailed parts like three funnels, seven 14cm guns, torpedo tubes, catapult gear and floatplanes. Metal flotation elements are included to help with realistic presentation in water-based dioramas.

Build complexity and presentation

The finished model has a length of 230mm and requires precise assembly, making it best suited to intermediate and advanced builders. Waterslide decals and easy-to-follow pictorial instructions are supplied to ensure small fittings and markings are correctly placed. The completed Natori is a fine showcase piece for a historical fleet display.

Because of the fine parts and scale, this kit is better for modellers with some experience rather than absolute beginners. Small-scale rigging and fine painting require patience.
Yes. The included metal flotation aid improves stability for shallow water dioramas, though additional base work and sealing will help protect the parts from moisture.
The pictorial instructions show colour callouts and placement guidance, but many builders reference historical photos or paint charts to match specific wartime schemes.
