The Mikuma served as a Mogami class cruiser, launched in the mid 1930s and later upgraded with heavier main armament. It saw action in early Pacific campaigns including the Malay landing operations and the Sunda Strait fight, before being lost after damage at Midway.
Tamiya's 31342 kit conveys the Mikuma's profile with neat, crisp parts. The kit highlights the vessel's bridge form and onboard fittings, while the turret assemblies and torpedo gear are sharply moulded to give a convincing scale appearance.
The two-piece hull design supports precise seam lines, and important features such as the aft mast and superstructure are accurately shaped. Polycaps allow the main turrets to rotate smoothly, adding extra realism to the completed model.
