Tamiya 31460 Shimakaze in 1/700 scale for detailed ship modelling

The Shimakaze gained attention in World War II as an exceptionally fast destroyer, with a top speed near 40.9 knots. She utilized powerful steam turbines generating 75,000 horsepower and carried unique quintuple torpedo tubes. Planned as the first of a 16 ship series, Shimakaze remained the only completed prototype and was sunk during the Battle of Ormoc Bay in November 1944.

Accurate assembly and period correct detail

Tamiya's 1/700 rendition gives modellers a faithful interpretation of the ship. First issued in 1972 and revised in 2017, the kit uses refreshed references to sharpen fit and surface detail for realistic builds.

Key Features of the Model Kit

  • Hull split into two halves to represent the narrow hull form.
  • Fine moulding on deck parts captures fixtures including anchor chain detail.
  • Twin gun turrets made with slide molds, and poly caps allow rotation of main armaments and torpedo mounts.
  • Decals include linoleum deck patterns and period markings.
  • Constructed to a waterline finish, ideal for small seascape displays.

Specifications

Build time varies with skill and finish. Expect several evenings for a basic assembly and longer for fine painting, rigging, and weathering details.
Photoetched parts can enhance railings and small grills but are optional. The kit is well detailed out of the box and builds into a fine display without aftermarket additions.
Use 1/700 scale figures, boats, and harbour accessories to create proportionate scenes. Small detail sets and waterline bases are commonly used with this kit.
