The Tamiya 31806 set recreates two important Royal Navy classes from the WWII era: the mighty battle cruiser Hood and the smaller E Class destroyers. Launched into service in May 1920, Hood was notable for her large displacement of 48,360 tons and long tenure as a flag vessel.
Hood took part in the May 23, 1941 sortie that included Prince of Wales and several destroyers aimed at intercepting Bismarck and Prinz Eugen. During the clash Hood was struck by Bismarck, which resulted in a catastrophic explosion and the loss of 1,416 sailors.
The E Class ships Echo and Electra, completed in 1934, each displaced around 1,350 tons and could reach speeds of about 36 knots. They saw service on Arctic and Mediterranean convoy duties and later in Pacific operations.
This 1/700 scale Tamiya kit captures the structural details of the vessels. When built the Hood measures 375mm in length and an E Class model measures 143mm, reflecting the real-life size differences. The kit shows accurate bridge and deck profiles.
Hobbyists will value the functional elements such as moveable main guns and torpedo tubes thanks to polycaps. The E Class hull halves are designed for straightforward assembly, and the kit includes markings for all nine E Class destroyers for authentic builds.
