Z Class German Destroyers - Evolution and Wartime Modifications

The Z Class destroyers, including Z37 through Z39, illustrate wartime shifts in armament and layout. These vessels began with 12.7cm guns but some were refitted with 15cm main guns and a twin-forward turret to improve firepower. Project Barbara later concentrated on anti-aircraft reinforcement, increasing the ships ability to resist air attack during later operations.

Kit Characteristics for the 1/700 Scale Builder

Tamiya's accurate 1/700 representation gives hobbyists the option to assemble both early and upgraded configurations. The kit includes finely molded radar elements and 37mm and 20mm cannon parts, and provides pieces to show the destroyers both before and after Project Barbara alterations.

Display Potential and Collecting Notes

As a pair, these models form a compact but detailed exhibit for dioramas or cabinets. The included painting guide and flag decals make it easier to match period camouflage and markings for a museum-quality look.

Specifications

  • Scale: 1/700
  • Material: High-quality plastic
  • Includes detailed radar and armaments

  • Paint: Not included, recommended for realism
Yes. The 1/700 scale and detailed fittings make these models well suited to small sea dioramas or naval display bases.
Decal sheets for flags are included in the set. The painting guide shows recommended colours to match historical schemes.
Photo-etch is optional. The plastic details are sharp, but advanced modellers often add photo-etch to enhance railings and small fittings.
Use model plastic cement for strong bonds. For tiny parts, a thin cyanoacrylate (super glue) may be useful, applied sparingly.
