Introducing the Tamiya 35177 Sturmtiger in 1/35 Scale

The Tamiya 1/35 German 38cm Assault Mortar Sturmtiger kit captures the imposing profile of a rare wartime assault vehicle. Built from the Tiger I chassis, the Sturmtiger carried an oversized 38cm mortar developed to smash through reinforced defensive works.

Design Background and Combat Use

Designed from August 1943 onwards, the Sturmtiger repurposed the short L/5.4 RW61 mortar, originally for naval defence, to attack hardened positions. The robust Tiger I hull handled extreme recoil stresses that could reach roughly 40 tons. To keep tank output steady, existing Tiger hulls were modified for conversion. Thick armour—about 150mm up front and 80mm on the sides—gave it substantial protection.

What the Kit Offers and Assembly Notes

This Tamiya kit includes finely detailed plastic parts moulded in light brown and black, a crew figure, accurate track patterns and a convincing interior and exterior. The package also contains an ammunition rack, 38cm rockets and a loading crane. Waterslide decals and clear instructions make the build satisfying for seasoned modellers; glue and paint are required separately.
