1/35 King Tiger II Ardennes kit by Tamiya 35252

The Tamiya 35252 release brings a finely modelled King Tiger II to the bench, presented in 1/35 scale for accurate battlefield modelling. The set includes a DKW NZ350 military motorcycle to add contextual realism to Ardennes style compositions.

Design background and kit content

The Tiger II was a late-war response to heavier enemy armor, fitted with the potent Type 43 L71 88mm gun and upgraded protection. This kit reproduces key items such as two alternative gun mantlets and a well-detailed turret assembly. It also provides three figures to populate scenes with commander and crew roles.

The included DKW NZ350 reflects wartime adjustments like reduced lighting and trimmed fenders, mirroring resource constraints in late production runs.

Building notes and display uses

Modelmakers will find this kit useful for compact dioramas focused on the Ardennes drive. The ability to position hatches and the motorcycle alongside the tank gives scope for storytelling. The parts and surface detail suit both display and kitbashing projects.

Build time varies with experience, but expect multiple evenings for assembly and several more for painting and weathering to reach display quality.
Many modellers choose aftermarket metal or vinyl tracks and extra detailing sets for gun mantlet and stowage to enhance realism, though the kit tracks are well moulded.
Light sanding of seam lines, a thin primer coat, and pin washes in panel lines produce convincing weathering before pigments for mud and dust are applied.
The DKW NZ350 has simpler shapes and fewer tiny parts, making it straightforward to paint. Use fine brushes for small details like headlight rims and seat areas.
