Since its original 1975 release the Tamiya 1/35 German Armored Car Sd.Kfz.222 has been respected by scale model fans. This North African variant brings out the classic subject with fresh detailing for modern builders.

History and what the kit includes

The Sd.Kfz.222 was widely used for scouting and screening duties, prized for mobility in harsh environments. Tamiya's kit aims to capture that role, offering parts that reflect the vehicle's operational use in desert campaigns.

This edition includes etched metal detail parts and an aluminium gun barrel for improved realism, plus crew figures: a commander and a radio operator. A DKW NZ350 motorcycle with rider is included to add life to your vignette.

Is this kit suitable for a first time armour builder?

The basic assembly is straightforward, but the photo-etched parts and metal barrel add intermediate-level tasks. Beginners can still build it, but should work slowly and read up on handling etched parts and CA glue techniques.

Can I use aftermarket paints and decals?

Yes. Standard 1/35 armour paints and decal sets are compatible. The kit provides three Afrika Korps decal options, but you can substitute or layer decals from other suppliers for different unit marks.

How should I weather desert vehicles for realism?

Use light dust washes, drybrushing and pigment powders in sandy tones. Focus on wheel wells, lower hull and crew contact areas. Thin layers and gradual buildup make the most natural result.

Is the motorcycle scaled to match the vehicle?

The included DKW NZ350 motorcycle and rider are modelled in the same 1/35 scale to integrate seamlessly with the Sd.Kfz.222 diorama layout.
