The JS-2, named after Joseph Stalin, entered service in 1944 and became a potent element of Soviet armour. It was developed to challenge German 88mm guns and to contend with heavy models like the Tiger and Panther. With its A-19 122mm main gun and up to roughly 120mm of protection at critical points, the JS-2 balanced firepower and protection. The Model 1944 variant is marked by a characteristic muzzle brake and a sloped front glacis that enhanced deflection.
Tamiya's 1/35 rendition of the JS-2 Model 1944 ChKZ captures the tank's mass and signature features. The moulded details include the muzzle brake and the sloped glacis, and photo-etched parts are supplied to refine the engine intake grille. Builders get a choice of belt-type or assembly-type tracks depending on preferred construction style. The kit also includes a commander figure and a loader torso to populate the vehicle and increase realism on the stand.
