Inside the Tamiya 1/35 Elefant release

The Tamiya 1/35 Elefant is a carefully engineered kit that appeals to scale enthusiasts and collectors alike. It emphasises period detail and construction techniques that suit experienced modellers and detailed restorations.

Origins and battlefield role

Conceived by Porsche in 1941 from the Ferdinand design, the Elefant carried the 8.8cm PaK 43 L/71 main gun. Despite early problems with speed and reliability, it proved effective in heavy fire engagements, notably at Kursk. Field modifications by 1944 added a machine gun and a commander's cupola, improving its serviceability across Eastern and Italian theatres and in late-war urban fighting.

Parts, build and finishing pointers

The model reproduces the Elefant's fighting compartment and distinctive boxy upper hull with precise moulding. Notable moulded items include front armour plates that bolt on, an accurate engine grille and a dedicated mount for the machine gun.

Tracks are supplied as joinable assembly sections to create a naturalistic sag. The kit includes three crew figures (commander, loader, driver) and three marking schemes for varied presentation choices.

Model painters typically use a primer, base coats and weathering techniques to highlight panel lines and the unique texture of the Elefant's armour.
Figures are designed for static poses that suit hatch openings shown in the kit; minor trimming can enhance fit for diorama work.
The kit is detailed out of the box, but modellers wanting extra finesse can add photoetched parts, metal barrels or resin accessories for refined realism.
