For pilots who want a small but spirited off-roader, the Tamiya MudMad gives plenty of character on the SW-01 platform. Developed with input from Takayaki Yamazaki, the model echoes rugged off-road themes while keeping the build and setup sensible for casual club days.
The SW-01 chassis packs a lot into a short wheelbase. Measuring 190mm by 150mm, it houses a Type 370 motor centrally within a streamlined monocoque. A gear-driven transmission sends torque to both axles so tyres at either end bite into the surface consistently. The elevated motor position also encourages dramatic wheelies under strong acceleration.
The lightweight polycarbonate shell is magnet-mounted for quick removal and comes pre-coated in PS-3 Light Blue. Its shape lets the body tilt naturally in corners to shrink turning radius and keep roll to a minimum for punchy, confidence-inspiring handling.
With strut-type, coil-sprung independent suspension at each wheel, the MudMad copes well with uneven terrain. Single-piece upper arms help match left and right steering inputs, and having front and rear differentials improves its ability to turn tightly without scrubbing speed.
Tamiya MudMad on the SW-01 chassis is a small-scale monster that balances playful wheelie potential with predictable handling for weekend sessions.
