Tamiya's Thunder Shot has a long history, first appearing in 1987, and the 2022 reissue preserves that heritage while adding practical refinements. The latest edition nods to earlier siblings like Fire Dragon and Thunder Dragon while bringing parts and fitment suited to current hobbyists.
The reissued chassis keeps the original layout but benefits from modern components. CVA oil dampers II replace the older Type I units to give more controlled damping. Along with a fully independent double wishbone layout on each wheel and a front stabiliser, the setup improves handling on rough tracks. The aluminium motor mount boosts rigidity and helps maintain motor alignment under load.
The bodyshell is made from tough polycarbonate, supplied pre-cut and pre-painted in a white and blue scheme, and includes a clear canopy for scale appearance. Stickers and the driver figure are supplied for final detailing. The ABS bathtub chassis provides a durable base and sealed gearboxes contain die-cast 3-bevel diffs for consistent drivetrain behaviour.
The kit comes with a Type 540 brushed motor and a HobbyWing THW 1060 Brushed Motor ESC compatible with 2-3S packs. You will need a 2-channel radio, a steering servo, and a 7.2V battery with suitable charger to complete the build. Semi-pneumatic spike tyres give good traction on loose surfaces.
Tamiya Thunder Shot 58706 combines classic looks with upgraded components, making it appealing to model collectors and active drivers who like to tune and maintain their 1/10 off-road buggies.
