The P-51D Mustang became one of the most recognisable Allied fighters of World War II. Designed at North American Aviation by Edgar Schmued, the airframe originally used an Allison V-1710 engine. Performance at altitude was greatly improved when fitted with the Packard-built V-1650-7 Merlin variant, which transformed its escort capability.
The P-51D's combination of sleek lines and operational history makes it a rewarding subject for scale modelling. It served widely with the USAAF, notably the Eighth Air Force, and the 1/72 Tamiya kit captures the Mustang's contours and armament layout for collectors and diorama builders alike.
