The Tamiya 1/72 Kawanishi N1K1-Ja Shiden Type 11 Koh captures the evolution of a Japanese wartime design that started as a floatplane. Kawanishi converted the N1K1 "Kyofu" into a land fighter during 1942, producing a nimble aircraft that proved competitive in dogfights.
The fighter used the Nakajima Homare powerplant, leading to a large diameter propeller and the need for telescopic landing gear to clear the airframe. Engine and undercarriage reliability were ongoing issues, yet production reached about 1,000 machines which served in areas including the Philippines, Formosa, Okinawa and missions over Honshu.
Model makers will appreciate the subject matter and Tamiya's precise moulding. The kit lets you reproduce the Shiden's unique layout and offers a satisfying paint and assembly process. Finished models make strong display pieces that reflect the aircraft's wartime engineering solutions.
