The Kawasaki Ki-61-Id Hien, nicknamed "Tony" by Allied crews, is a notable World War II fighter introduced into service in 1943. Its liquid-cooled Ha-40 engine stood apart from many contemporaries, and the Id variant's extended nose housed 20mm cannons plus extra machine guns. Because the Ki-61-Id was produced in larger numbers, it remains a popular subject for scale building and historical study.
The Hien excelled in higher-altitude tasks, including interceptions of heavy bombers like the B29, due to stronger performance at altitude. In 1/72 scale the model captures the silhouette and key surface features without demanding excessive display space, making it a good choice for display cabinets or detailed flight dioramas.
The Tamiya 60789 kit gives a satisfying assembly path with well-engineered parts and a guide to Tamiya Color paints for faithful finishes. Model makers can improve realism with fine washes, subtle weathering, and precise canopy masking. Completed models present well on stands or as part of a small scene.
