Why the F-15C Eagle mattered

The McDonnell Douglas F-15C Eagle is a standout in modern fighter history. Making its maiden flight in July 1972, the aircraft uses a pair of Pratt & Whitney F100-PW-100 turbofans to achieve speeds in excess of Mach 2.5. Its armament includes an internal 20mm M-61A-1 rotary cannon and carriage capacity for AIM-9L Sidewinder and AIM-7F Sparrow missiles.
