The Douglas F4D-1 Skyray stands out as the only delta-wing interceptor fielded by the U.S. Navy. Stemming from post-war aerodynamic research, its formal design started in 1947 and the prototype first flew in January 1951, featuring its 50-degree sweptback, delta-style wings and notable speed records for the era.
The production version made its first flight in June 1954 and squadrons received the type by April 1956. Although it never engaged in combat, it was deployed during the late 1950s regional tensions. The Tamiya 61055 kit in 1/48 scale faithfully portrays the Skyray for display or diorama use.
