Robocraft Mechanical Turtle - Four-Leg Walking Model

The Tamiya Mechanical Turtle is a Robocraft kit focused on mechanical linkages and walking motion. This four-legged design recreates turtle-like crawling and makes a useful demonstration piece for learning basic mechanics.

Leg Linkage Design

The model uses motor-driven crank plates to translate rotary motion into leg movement, giving a convincing crawl. Front and rear legs are moulded as single components, and the front plate connects via a ball joint to mimic natural stepping. Clear parts on the shell and limbs add a lightweight, technical look.

Parts Supplied and Assembly

Contents include the body shell, leg assemblies, motor, gearbox, switch and fixing screws. Assembly is straightforward, combining screws with snap-lock parts so both beginners and experienced builders can manage the build. Cable ends are rubber-capped with marked cut points to help with wiring.

Operation Tips

The transparent switch with green highlights enables forward and reverse motion while complementing the modern styling. For consistent movement place the model on flat, smooth surfaces to avoid drag from carpets or uneven floors.

Specifications

  • Total length: 166mm
  • Total weight: 95g (excluding batteries)
  • Body material: ABS resin
  • Includes gearbox, motor, and reverse switch
  • Requires one R04/AAA/UM4 battery (sold separately)
  • Continuous running time with an alkaline battery: 1 hour
Assembly is suitable for hobbyists new to kits. Parts include snap-fit sections and screws, but small components require patience and basic tools like a screwdriver and side cutters.
Smooth surfaces such as timber, tile or sealed concrete allow the turtle to crawl freely. Thick carpet, grass or gravel will impede movement.
The kit includes a matched motor and gearbox. Upgrading to a stronger motor is possible but check gearbox fit and wiring, as higher torque may stress the drive components.
Use a standard R04/AAA/UM4 cell available from supermarkets, hardware stores or electronics retailers. Choose a fresh alkaline cell for best run time.
