The Tamiya 71117 Sliding Ladybug presents a hands-on way for learners to explore mechanical concepts while putting together a playful model. The build encourages curiosity about gears, motors and how small changes affect movement.
A Type 130 motor spins an off-center weight plate to create vibrations that move the model. The three ground-contact rods convert those vibrations into a sliding action, and adjusting their tilt changes the travel path for simple experiments.
The kit combines snap-on components with a few screws for a straightforward build that teaches sequencing and patience. The ladybug shape keeps the project fun, and the rolling eye parts help it pass minor bumps on level floors.
Use flat, even floors to get the best performance and set up short challenges using boxes or paper to test obstacle handling. Note that the kit needs one R1/AAA/UM4 battery, available separately.
