Meet the Tamiya 71124 Mechanical Mammoth Kit

The Tamiya 71124 Mechanical Mammoth is a compact Robocraft model designed for visible, mechanical motion and easy display. It offers a practical way for tinkerers and learners to see gear-driven movement in action.

How It Moves

The mammoth advances with a steady gait while the head bobs side to side for visual interest. A gear ratio of 203.7:1 controls the walking pace, and the trunk can be adjusted by hand to change the pose.

Learning While You Build

Parts are moulded in clear ABS so the internal linkages remain visible throughout assembly, which helps explain simple mechanisms. No cement is needed, making the build suitable for beginners and group projects.

Battery and Dimensions

Operation requires one AA battery (sold separately), keeping power simple and easy to replace. The model measures 165mm long and 107mm tall, making it well suited to shelves and desktop exhibits.

Specifications

  • Material: Clear ABS
  • Dimensions: Length 165mm, Height 107mm
  • Power Source: 1 AA battery (not included)
  • Articulation: Bobbing head, movable trunk
Smooth, flat surfaces like tabletops or laminated desks give the most consistent walking action. Avoid thick carpet or uneven ground.
Assembly time varies with experience, but most hobbyists can complete the kit in one focused session of a couple of hours.
You can paint external surfaces, but take care not to obstruct moving parts or gears. Test paint on spare plastic first for compatibility.
