Tamiya 71126 Mechanical Swimmer: Practical Water Robotics Kit

The Tamiya 71126 Mechanical Swimmer is a compact educational kit for anyone interested in basic robotics and mechanism design. By changing limb and head positions, you can switch between Freestyle, Butterfly and Backstroke to see how setup affects movement.

Engineering Details

Power comes from a Submarine Motor Mini and an Underwater Gearbox that convert rotary motion into limb movement via crankarms. Rubber bands connect the drive to the arms, producing a convincing swim stroke while demonstrating linkages and torque transfer.

Assembly Notes

This snap-together model needs no tools, making it accessible for clubs and classrooms. It ships with a high-speed Submarine Motor Mini fitted with two O-rings to help limit water entry. Remember to provide one AAA battery, which is not included.

Specifications

  • Includes Submarine Motor Mini (High-Speed Type)
  • Underwater Gearbox for limb movement
  • Rudder adjustable for straight or circular swimming
  • Requires 1 AAA battery (not included)
Typical build time is around 30 to 60 minutes depending on experience, since parts snap together without gluing or screws.
You can test in calm outdoor water but avoid strong currents and murky conditions that could clog the mechanism or damage the motor seals.
Spare rubber bands and replacement motors are commonly available from hobby suppliers; keep a small parts kit for easy maintenance.
The model helps teach gearing, linkages, waterproofing basics and the effect of limb geometry on propulsion, suitable for classroom demos.
