It will hold most display models, but very heavy pieces may benefit from extra support beneath the base to avoid sagging over time.

What is the best way to prepare the surface before painting?

Lightly abrade the surface with fine sandpaper, clean off dust, then apply a plastic primer. This gives the most reliable paint adhesion.
