The Hawk Mk.66, derived from the original Hawk design, has been central to pilot training since its 1974 introduction. Built around the Adour 151 turbofan, it carries a maximum takeoff weight of 2,360kg and features an 11 metre fuselage capable of handling up to 3 tonnes of stores, including AIM-9L Sidewinders and a 30mm gun pod.
As an advanced trainer with improved engine output, the Hawk Mk.66 was adopted by Switzerland, who operated 20 examples between 1990 and 2002. Pilots valued the platform for its predictable handling in both training and light attack roles.
Tamiya's 1/48 offering captures the Hawk's compact silhouette. Once assembled the model is 242mm long and 197mm tall. The kit includes photo-etched components for instrument clusters and mirrors while weapons fitments like the gun pod, drop tank and Sidewinder missiles let you replicate operational loadouts.
