Reissued Tamiya 58336 The Hornet — 1/10 Bathtub-Style 2WD

The Hornet returns in this 58336 re-release with the same straightforward concept: a resilient ABS bathtub frame, a sealed rear gearbox and a simple 2WD drivetrain. The body shape and component layout recreate the original silhouette while keeping parts accessible for assembly and light maintenance.

Design and mechanical character

The bathtub-style ABS resin chassis gives the model a compact, serviceable layout with few extra mounts. The sealed rear gearbox shelters the gear differential during rough running, and the front suspension uses independent swing arms. Friction dampers reflect the kit's vintage setup, and the drive arrangement is built around a 540-class brushed motor and a solid rear axle.

Chassis, suspension and drivetrain analysis

Structurally the bathtub chassis provides a stable, low-maintenance platform that positions drivetrain and suspension components with minimal bracketing. Independent front suspension works with a solid axle at the rear; the gearbox casing holds the differential and reduces exposure to dirt. The overall arrangement is intentionally simple to suit display models and casual off-road use.

Body, tires and intended terrain

The clear polycarbonate body replicates original lines and is easy to trim and paint. Tires are straight-rib at the front and spiked at the rear to match general off-road conditions. The model's geometry and weight bias are tuned for recreational off-road driving rather than specialised racing.

Who the kit suits

This reissue will appeal to builders who like a hands-on assembly project with a classic aesthetic. It is also well suited to collectors who want an authentic recreation of the original bathtub-chassis Hornet, and to hobbyists who prefer a simple, serviceable mechanical layout.

arrived on time and well packed thank you
Yes. The kit is a 1/10 scale model, so standard 1/10 electrics and accessories are compatible in size.
The sealed rear gearbox helps keep dirt and debris away from the gear differential, lowering maintenance needs after off-road running.
No. The kit uses friction-type dampers as per the original specification rather than oil-filled shock units.
The body is clear polycarbonate and is intended for trimming and painting with polycarbonate paints; prepare by masking and using paints formulated for lexan-style shells.
The kit includes a combination of metal and plastic bushings rather than full ball bearings in many locations, reflecting the original build approach.
