The English Electric Lightning earned its reputation for rapid climb and distinctive centreline engine layout while serving with the Royal Air Force. This 1:72 scale Trumpeter 01634 kit aims to represent the jet's unique silhouette and operational appearance for scale modellers.

Operational History and Variant Differences

Introduced as an interceptor, the Lightning evolved to fill strike and recon roles. The F.1 first flew in October 1959 and carried radar and Firestreak missiles. Upgrades seen on F.1A and F.2 models included in-flight refuelling, enhanced electronics and a steerable nosewheel to aid taxiing and runway alignment.

Assembly Notes and Finishing Tips

The kit comprises 72 plastic components along with 4 clear parts for the canopy and missiles, all on five sprues. When built the model is 233.13mm long with a 148.06mm wingspan. The light grey plastic takes paint well, and the included decals depict Lightning F.1A XM 181 in RAF service from 1971.
