The SS John W. Brown served during World War II and completed 13 voyages to the Persian Gulf and Mediterranean theatre. She took part in the Anzio landings and supported the southern France invasion during Operation Dragoon in August 1944, where crew members from the US Navy Armed Guard reportedly shot down an enemy aircraft. Following hostilities the ship aided recovery work in Europe and helped return US troops home.
