The Type VIIC was the most numerous German attack submarine produced during the Second World War, evolved from earlier Type VII designs in the late 1930s. It operated primarily on Atlantic convoy patrols and coastal missions, equipped with torpedoes and, in early wartime outfits, a deck gun. Standard fittings included five torpedo tubes (four forward and one aft), and some versions were modified to carry naval mines.
