USS Astoria CA-34 (1942) 1:700 Scale Model by Trumpeter

Designed at 1:700 scale, this plastic model kit depicts USS Astoria CA-34 in its 1942 configuration and is aimed at hobbyists seeking a compact cruiser subject for display builds.

The real vessel is a member of the New Orleans class, the final group of second-generation treaty heavy cruisers constructed between the world wars. The seven ships of the class shared many external features; wartime additions such as radar and extra AA weaponry increased their displacement. These cruisers were heavily involved in Pacific operations and collectively earned multiple battle stars.

The model records specific hull measurements and offers a moderate parts count appropriate for careful small-scale assembly. Assembled hull length, beam, and height are listed, and parts are split over multiple sprues for methodical sub-assembly. Decals for US Navy identification are included. Builders should plan for precise painting, fine detail work, and rigging to replicate a mid-war appearance accurately.

A faithful small-scale rendition of a World War II heavy cruiser, appropriate for collectors and modellers focusing on compact, historically informed displays.

For 1:700 scale work use a fine hobby knife, small files, fine tweezers, and a plastic-compatible cement with a fine applicator. CA glue can be useful for tiny fittings but use sparingly to avoid visible residue.
Break the build into hull, deck fittings, superstructure, and small detail sub-assemblies. Paint sub-assemblies before final joining where access will be restricted.
Prime first, then apply base sea and deck colors. Mask and add camouflage or deck details, finish with subtle weathering washes to suggest wear without obscuring small details.
Use very fine thread or stretched sprue for standing rigging and apply minimal tension. Consider simple rigging patterns to avoid overpowering the small-scale silhouette.
