Will these nuts work with aftermarket springs?

Yes, they control spring preload on XLP shocks regardless of brand of spring, but confirm the shock model and clearance to ensure full travel is maintained.

Can I polish or modify the anodise?

Light cleaning is fine but avoid sanding or heavy polishing that will remove the anodised layer. If the finish is damaged, replace the nut to prevent corrosion and binding.

Is this a good spare to carry?

Carrying a spare pair is sensible for race meets, since they are small, lightweight and quick to swap if you notice wear or thread issues during setup checks.
